The Best Garage Flooring Options

To keep concrete garage floors from deteriorating, they will need to be coated or covered with some durable material. Concrete floors are porous and can easily become stained and pitted with constant usage, especially in a garage, and will therefore need some form of protection to last long. Garage coverings and coatings are some of the best garage flooring options for protecting concrete garage floors, from damage.

Garage coverings include rubber mats, tiles and roll out coverings. You may get rubber mats with raised edges that prevent water and oil spill run-offs, or mats with interlocking edges that create a seamless layout for your garage floor. Garage floor tiles are easy to clean and may not need to be glued for use. Roll out flooring coverings are made from PVC plastic, and may consist of different layers of materials.

What you will need to look for in garage coverings include resistance to chemicals, easy installation, ability to protect from oil, salt and antifreeze. You may choose to go with non-adhesive coverings too. You will also want garage coverings with tread patterns that make your coverings slip resistant. Your garage coverings should be easy to remove for cleaning, and should be guaranteed to last for several years. You also will want to be able to customize any garage floor covering you buy for your use.

There are different types of garage flooring options that are available for coating concrete garage floors as well as the ones for matting to cover up the floors. Some of these include epoxy paint, polyurethane, latex paint and stains.

Epoxy paint will provide good resistance to most of the chemicals used in garages, but may be affected by exposure to sunlight. Polyurethane is more resistant to chemicals than epoxy, and may not be easily affected by the sun. You may not be able to apply polyurethane directly on concrete though, since polyurethane may not bond very well with it, you will need to apply a base like epoxy on the concrete first, before using polyurethane.

Latex paint is a very cheap flooring option, you can use for your garage floor too, how well you prepare your garage floor will determine how long the latex will last for your garage. Stains are coatings you can use as flooring for concrete too. Stains can react chemically with concrete, to create some specific look or pattern.

Most of these coatings may need some time to dry, and you may have to wait for some of them to cure too, before you can use them for heavy traffic.

These garage flooring options can improve your garage outlook, and protect your garage floor from chemicals, oil and stains. You will need to look at the features of each type of coverings and coatings, and how much you can afford, to choose the right type of flooring for yourself.
