A Polished Concrete Floor Looks Surprisingly Great

This Polished Concrete Floor Changed My Mind.

I have an old friend who recently built a new house. I mean he is old in the sense that we have been buddies since high school, not because he is old in years, although we are both getting up there. Anyway, he told me he was going to go with polished concrete flooring for the bottom level of his house. It is a Craftsman style and there is no basement. Just a main floor and then an upper floor with the master suite and another bedroom. It is a great looking house with all natural wood. My friend used to work in the lumber business and so he has always enjoyed the look of wood in all the houses he built.
Anyway, he told me that he was going to put polished concrete floors in the main level. He explained that he was going to use in floor heating so he was going to pour a concrete slab anyway. He just figured that polished concrete would look better than tile or carpet or some other type of flooring.
I wasn’t so sure. The thought of a dull, gray concrete slab in that gorgeous home was just too much for me to imagine. He went high end in everything so why would he leave the floor looking like an unfinished warehouse floor? It didn’t make any sense. I mean, normally he has all kinds of good taste, a lot better than me, but I thought for sure he would end up being unhappy with this look.
Boy was I wrong. I went over to watch the Super Bowl at his house and when I walked in the effect was amazing. That floor, although it was gray, just seemed so elegant and played off the natural wood and stone of the fireplace. I became a believer in concrete flooring right then.
For his floor he just polished the concrete surface after acid etching. It is absolutely amazing and the bare concrete does a great job of transferring the heat from the in-floor heating system to your feet and then up to the rest of the home. And there isn’t a cold spots in the entire place. If you are thinking about a polished concrete floor with in home heating I would highly recommend it. Be sure to talk to several concrete contractors and heating guys so you get the best system and you are absolutely happy with the results. Also, ask the concrete company if you can see some of their other work. They may take you to a project they have done, or they may have photos. Either way, this will really change your mind about concrete that is polished.
