Is A Prefab Garage Right For You?

Prefab garages are the perfect choice for just about any homeowner. Whether you are looking to rebuild your current garage or simply want a new storage area, prefabricated garage kits are a great choice. The majority of people using kits rather than building a garage from scratch do so because it is so much easier. I bought a kit once and built a 6’X8′ garden shed. It turned out great and it was easy to follow the directions.
When building a garage from the bottom up you have to worry about hiring somebody to create the plans and draw up the blueprints, then you have to take these plans to the building inspector and get them approved. This is before you have even broken ground. Then, you have to buy the materials, hire a contractor to put everything together, and get all of the inspections done. Seems like a lot of long hard work to most people, when prefab garage kits include everything you need to get started. All you have to worry about is getting the right permits and deciding whether or not you want to hire a contractor.

What Are Prefabricated Garages?
Prefabricated garages are simply garages that are already built or are in a kit for that you put together. Prefab garage kits come with all of the materials and hardware that you will need to erect your garage, saving you a lot of time. Or, you may only get the hardware and you can buy the lumber locally. This is how I did my garden shed. One of the best things about prefab garages is that they will do the same duty as regular garages; they just are easier and quicker to build. Prefab ones can be used to store cars or belongings, but they can also be used to house your numerous hobbies. Whatever you have used for a garage in the past, you can use a prefabbed one for the same purpose.

Are Prefab Garages Cheaper?
One of the great things about prefab garages is how cost effective they are. The majority of people who have priced building a garage from the ground up have discovered just how expensive it is, but also how time consuming it is. Prefabricated garage kits are quite a bit cheaper than buying each individual piece, but they also save a lot of time. And most of us would agree that saving time is just as good as saving money, your time is just as valuable as money.

Do I Need A Permit To Build A Prefab Garage?
One of the biggest and most important questions that people ask when it comes to prefab garage kits is do they need permission from the city before building one. The short answer to that is yes. No matter what you are building, you will need to get the proper permits from the city before building, and always remember to call about utility lines before you attempt to start digging.

In getting the proper permits to build your garage you will need to show the city your current plans. Drawing up plans yourself or even hiring an architect to draw them up often means hours of labor, plus the chance of one or more aspects of your plan not being approved. Not to mention that the approval process can take forever, especially with all the back and forth. With prefabricated garage kits, the plans come included with the kit, plus using these pre-approved plans makes the approval process a lot shorter.

Do I Need To Hire A Contractor?
One of the great things about purchasing one of these kits rather than building the garage from the ground up is that you really do not need to hire a contractor. While you do not have to hire a contractor when building a garage from scratch, hiring one does make it easier. With these prefab kits, everything that you need is there, all of the materials and hardware, plus the plans and the instructions. However, sometimes hiring a contractor is the best choice because you will get the job done a lot faster. But, if you have a few buddies to help, you can make great progress working on weekends and after work.
Before deciding on whether you want to hire a contractor or not you want to take a close look at the plans and instructions, if they look easy enough for you to do on your own great, if not then do not be afraid to ask for help. Wouldn’t you rather have the job done right the first time?

Choosing The Right Prefab Garage Kit?
Once you have decided that prefab garage kits are the perfect choice for your current needs, you will need to make sure you pick out the right one. With these kits there are so many different ones to choose from it can be a bit overwhelming. However, if you keep a few things in mind you really cannot go wrong.

One of the first things to think about is how you plan to use the garage. Knowing what you plan to use the garage for is helpful in a variety of ways because it allows you to choose the kits that come with all of the extras you want, such as shelves or workbenches. Not only that, but it also helps you determine the size you need, nothing is worse than deciding on a garage, buying it, building it, and then discovering that it is too small!

Knowing where you plan to place your garage is also important; the climate will affect what type of garage kit you purchase. Steel garages are a more durable than any other, so they will hold up to heavy snow and ice, but they are more expensive. Wood garages can be treated or covered with siding to help withstand various types of weather. Always remember when picking a kit you can choose what each part is made of, so you can mix and match making your garage perfect for your exact climate.

How much money you have to spend on a prefabricated garage is also important when choosing your kit. The worst thing that you can do is buy the cheapest one out there, remember you often get what you pay for. With prefabricated garage kits, you do not need to sacrifice money for quality because of how much money you are already saving simply by using the kit. When looking at the quality being offered make sure to investigate the manufacturer, you only want to deal with reputable businesses!
