A Homeowners Guide to Concrete Floors

This is a great time in history to own your own home. Never has there been such a wide variety of choices – particularly when it comes to flooring. When you think about concrete floors – chances are you think of the floor in your garage, not a possible material for the floor in the kitchen or living room. Believe it or not, concrete is gaining popularity as a material for interior floors – and with good reason. In this article we’ll discuss some of the benefits of concrete floors, the various types of floor finishes you can find and a few basics on keeping your floor in great shape. By the end of this article you’ll have a new appreciation for concrete and may have a few ideas of where you can take advantage of it in your home.

Benefits of Concrete Floors

Concrete floors have a lot going for them. Here are just a few of the benefits:

* Durability

Concrete floors are one of the most durable flooring materials available. Basically they don’t wear out. They cannot warp, flake, mildew, buckle or dent. They are inflammable, don’t react to ultra violet light and can withstand up to 4500 pounds per square inch. Of all flooring types, they are the least likely to need replacement or refinishing.

* Energy Efficient

One reason to choose concrete flooring is its energy efficiency. Because of its mass, concrete can absorb, and then slowly release heat and coldness. This lessens the load on the home’s HVAC system.

* Easy Maintenance

Other flooring types require significant maintenance. Carpeting must be vacuumed regularly. Hardwood is susceptible to water damage and must be refinished periodically. Tile can break and grout can be really difficult to clean. With concrete, all that is required is a periodic sweeping or dust mopping. That’s it.

Concrete Floor Finishes

There are numerous ways to finish your concrete floor. In addition to popular finishes such as polishing and acid-staining, you can find other methods of finishing the floor. If you’re a DIY oriented person, look into concrete floor paint. Depending on the look you’re going for and the amount you want to spend, you may find that concrete floors paint better than they stain.

Concrete Floor Repair

Overall, concrete floors are extremely easy to maintain. They can’t be damaged by water or sunlight and require little maintenance. There are times however when you may find yourself in need of repair work. Sometimes concrete can crack – generally this is the result of improper installation or major settling of the house. It is possible to put a chip in the floor if it is hit with enough force. If your floor is polished or acid stained,  or has another type of concrete floor coating, it’s best to call in the help of a professional to complete the repair. They will best be able to match the repair with the rest of the finish of the floor. If your floor is untreated however, you may be able to repair it yourself.

In summary, concrete floors are one of the best values on the market. They cost less than wood, last longer and are easier to maintain. Repairs will be needed infrequently, if ever, and some you may be able to accomplish yourself. If you’re looking at new construction, or looking to replace your existing floors, give concrete a look – you’ll be glad you did.
